Pet Law | Do Dogs legally need to wear an ID tag?

This is something not discussed enough & if you’re a new Dog owner, you might not know! If I’m being honest, until opening Big Pawfection I didn’t!

The short answer is Yes! As soon as your Pup steps outside (into a public area) they are legally required to wear an ID tag!

In fact the Control of Dogs Act 1992 states, "... every dog while in a highway or in a place of public resort shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it."

WHAT INFORMATION SHOULD BE INCLUDED ??

It’s not recommended to have your Pups name on an ID Tag, as this makes it easy for strangers to get a response from them, but ID Tags must include the following information as a minimum…

- Family Name
- House Number & Postcode

Whilst not law, we recommend adding a contact number too! It will just make it a bit easier if your Pup does get lost.

WHAT IF MY DOG IS MICROCHIPPED ??

We often hear but my dog is Microchipped so it’s fine. Well unfortunately that is not the case! Even if your dog is microchipped, an ID Tag is still required by Law.

So unless you’re Pup is exempt, like police or guide Dogs - get your paws on an ID tag!
